Stop Photos importing my iPhone pictures?

stop photos from launching when iphone 6 plus plugged in connected mac os x apple

When Apple decided to merge Aperture and iPhoto into the new Photos app, they made a lot of neat changes, but also seem to have chopped out almost all of the preferences and settings that those programs had. Not sure why they though we’d want less control, but it is rather tricky to figure out how to teach Photos not to grab everything it can off your iPhone every time you plug it in.

Worse, there are no system preferences either, so exploring “System Preferences…” isn’t going to solve the problem.

The secret turns out to be within the Photos program itself, and it’s not in that program’s Preferences either!

Plug in an Apple iPhone and here’s what happens:

apple photos app mac os x

Boom! Photos launches with the last import (which happens to be a really cool steampunk spider light).

You might think “let’s check out Preferences…”

photos app preferences

No joy. Nothing even close, actually.

Instead, click on the “Import” tab while your phone is still plugged in to your iMac or MacBook:

import tab photos app mac os x

Lots of photos from your iPhone.

But look more closely on the top left, because that’s where the solution lies:

how to disable auto launch of photos app iphone mac os x

So there’s the solution. Uncheck Open Photos for this device, quit the program, and you’re good to go!
